Author, researcher, speaker, justice advocate

Darrell A. Siggers is a Detroit-born author, legal researcher, and public speaker whose 1984 murder conviction was vacated in 2018 after more than three decades of incarceration. The case turned on forensic ballistics analysis and evidence that was never disclosed to his defense — material Siggers spent years locating, organizing, and pressing before the courts.

During his imprisonment he became a self-taught paralegal and a fixture of the law library, drafting motions for himself and for other incarcerated men, assembling transcripts, and studying the forensic literature underlying his own conviction. That work is the spine of his completed memoir, Sixteen Lawyers: Under the Shadow of Justice.

Since his release, Siggers has spoken at university law colleges, professional conferences, community forums, and advocacy summits, and has been interviewed by regional press and national podcasts. He leads nonprofit community work through Access Plus Answers, a 501(c)(3) dedicated to providing digital devices, computer training, and access to support services for children, seniors, and families.

He writes and speaks from a single conviction: the record almost always contains the truth, and someone has to be willing to read it.

Access Plus Answers is the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization Darrell founded after his release, based in Lincoln Park, Michigan. As its motto puts it: giving access is the answer to uplifting communities.

Vision. Supporting communities by creating access to online services that help citizens stay plugged into technology and resources — and welcoming all who want to help in the great work of helping others.

How the work happens. Through its Digital Access Project, the organization distributes laptops and tablets to low-income children ages 9–14, seniors, and families — with orientation on setup, Wi-Fi, and online safety, plus virtual computer-basics classes. Partnerships with schools, senior centers, and community organizations identify those most in need, and essential resources such as coats, shoes, and transportation round out the support.
